TANGHU MIDDLE SCHOOL, THURSDAY---November 23rd is the western Thanksgiving Day. As Chinese, we have also expressed our heartfelt appreciation to our family, teachers, friends and relatives for their love, devotion and company. In fact, Thanksgiving Day is now celebrated throughout the world.
As is known to us all, the Chinese culture also boasts some unique traditional festivals that are accumulated through thousands of years of history. In order to rise the students’ traditional cultural awareness, this week, Avery and Mr. Lee, our cultural corner organizers, helped us engaged in a heated cultural discussion.
The topic for this week’s English corner is "HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW ABOUT CHINESE TRADITIONAL FESTIVALS? "Just as usual, the students were divided into several groups. During the group discussion, all the students were actively involved in, and they were so enthusiastic to share their views about different festivals, such as the Mid-Autumn Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival, Tomb Sweeping festival and the Spring Festival, among which the spring festival was mentioned the most. One student said she likes the Spring Festival because the elders give red envelopes to their children and buy new clothes for them. Another student said that the most attractive moment of the Spring Festival is to spend time watching the Spring Festival Gala with his family.
After listening to the students’ introduction, Avery began to introduce the western tradition of Thanksgiving to the students. He said that Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday celebrated in Canada on the second Monday of October. Although Thanksgiving has historical roots in religious and cultural traditions, it has long been celebrated as a secular holiday as well.
