See you again: the fisrt English corner of this semester

Avery

¡¡¡¡The first English Corner for Senior 1 students was held on September 28, after dinner. We hosted approximately 70 students on the first floor, below their classrooms. The topic for the first English Corner was, ¡°Tell us about someone you admire, or someone that inspires you.¡±
¡¡¡¡We had close to 25 speakers at the first English Corner. It was a very successful event. We had students talk about many different people that inspired them. Some talked about singers, others talked about athletes, some students even talked about teachers that inspired them. One student even talked about her father, and how he inspired her. I thought all of the speakers¡¯ English was good for this first event. There were a few mistakes, but that is OK, you will only get better from here. I want to thank the students for attending and the teachers for encouraging their students to come to this event.

¡¡¡¡I would like to repeat the guidelines and rules for this event:
¡¡¡¡1.Come prepared to the event.
¡¡¡¡¡¡a.Bring questions, bring notes or bring ideas. But please bring something.
¡¡¡¡¡¡b.Can be a page long, can be a few sentences. As long as you are comfortable with it.
¡¡¡¡2.Encourage others, no matter their level of English.
¡¡¡¡¡¡a.Especially if they are nervous.
¡¡¡¡3.Help others.
¡¡¡¡¡¡a.We will all make mistakes.
¡¡¡¡¡¡b.If you notice a mistake, help them correct it. (nicely)
¡¡¡¡4.Everyone has a chance to try.
¡¡¡¡¡¡a.Providing we have time
¡¡¡¡5.No pushing or pointing at people to go next.
¡¡¡¡¡¡a.If you push or point at someone. I take the person who pushes, or is pointing
¡¡¡¡6.Guidelines:
¡¡¡¡¡¡a.In small groups (4-6), read what you prepared. (10 minutes)
¡¡¡¡¡¡b.Help your group if you can.
¡¡¡¡¡¡c.If you need help, ask a teacher or another group, maybe they can help.
¡¡¡¡¡¡d.After about 10 minutes, we will move to a larger group.
¡¡¡¡¡¡e.In the larger group, read what you have prepared. (20 minutes)
¡¡¡¡¡¡f.Listen to others quietly. (if you must talk, do it quietly)

¡¡¡¡Public speaking is very difficult for some people. I used to be a very nervous person. In high school, I could never have stood up in front of a class and talk. Now I am a teacher, and every day, I stand at the front of different classes and speak to 40 ¨C 60 students. It may seem scary at first, but your classmates are your friends and this is the best time to practice this skill. Most of the very successful people I know are very good public speakers. I think it is a very good skill to have and practice for your future. After you finish school, this is something that many companies look for in their new employees.
